Rollin David Larrick, Ph.D., Director of Instructional Content

David received his BA with High Distinction in Greek and his MA in English from the University of Virginia, where he was named a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He did graduate work in Norse, Danish, Middle High German, Runic Inscriptions, and Anglo-Saxon with the Medieval Studies Program at Cornell University before joining the Humanities Program at Florida State University. There he earned his interdisciplinary PhD with emphasis on Greek and Latin literature, his dissertation consisting of a transcription and translation of, and commentary on, an extensive 15th century Latin codex.

His academic interests include the history of the English language; the evolution of Romance languages from Latin; Old and Middle English literature; folklore and ballads; Old and Middle High German literature; Norse sagas and Edda; 19th Century Romanticism; and Germanic, Latin, and Greek linguistics.

He retired after 35 years of teaching, the last 25 years as Latin and Greek teacher at Albemarle High School, near Charlottesville, Virginia. He also for many years concurrently taught Linguistics for Teachers as an adjunct instructor at the University of Virginia, and Latin, English grammar, and Humanities at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Before that he taught English and Humanities at Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia; grammar, English Composition, and Applied Writing at Ithaca College in New York; bio-scientific morphology at Ball State University in Indiana; and Humanities at Florida State.

David was a regularly-featured presenter on teaching vocabulary at the annual Albemarle Schools Making Connections seminars, and he continues to compile word lists and serve as caller for local and regional spelling bees. He was awarded the 1988 Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding High School Teacher Award, and in 2002 he received the Central Virginia area’s Golden Apple Award. In 2007, North Carolina State University honored him with its Inspirational Teacher Award.

One of the original founders of Dynamic Literacy, David serves as Director of Instructional Content, being an adviser on matters of language and instructional methodology, and a product developer for the WordBuild® Vocabulary Development System.
